HEARTGARD® Plus contains active ingredient of ivermectin. It binds to glutamated-gated chloride channels to insect nerve and muscle cells. It causes paralysis and death. It is used in dogs to prevent heartworm disease by eliminating the infective heartworm larvae. Mosquitos can carry heartworm larvae when they bite on infected dogs. When they bite on other dogs, the heartworm larvae will be transmitted into the blood stream of dogs. 

Dog is the definitive host of heartworms, meaning that the the heartworms mature into adult and reproduce offspring while living inside a dog. The heartworms grow and reproduce offsprings inside the cardiopulmonary vascular system for up to 5 - 7 years. It damages the cardiopulmonary tissues affecting the circular system and other organs in the body resulting in death.

Instruction: Heartworm prevention can start straight when dogs in 3 - 6 months old. Dogs should have 1 chew monthly. If your dog is over 6 month old but have not been received prevention yet, you should have a veterinary consultation and heartworm test before starting it.
